Meet Lee Pohlsander

Lee Pohlsander is a painter and mixed media artist featured in Abstract PXV, a group show on display at Art Work Gallery for December 2023 and January 2024.

Artist Biography

Lee Pohlsander was exposed to art throughout childhood, from classical to medieval to modern abstracts, including works by Joan Mitchell, Louise Nevelson, Isamu Noguchi, and others.

In Albany and Syracuse, Lee worked as an Advertising Art Director and Graphic Designer, developing skills of composition, color, communication, and messaging. Between design work and raising a family, Lee continued to work on personal projects, taking classes in sculpture, paper making, portraiture, and printmaking, and occasionally participating in group shows.

A move to Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, spurred Lee’s personal visual art expressions. Phoenixville’s strong, supportive creative community of visual artists, musicians, writers, and performers energized Lee to create abstract paintings and mixed media works, using strong compositional and color skills honed as a designer.

She has participated in multiple Open Studio Tours and group shows in Southeastern Pennsylvania, winning second place in the annual Pottstown Artist Guild show in 2018.

In September - December 2021, she had a solo show “The Connection To Ladders” at The Gallery at Creative Light Factory. This show of works inspired by Samuel Beckett’s play “Endgame” included an artist’s talk and a staged reading of the play.

“The Connection To Ladders” was also featured in the window gallery of The Upstairs Studio Artists in February 2022.

Artist Statement

I paint as connection, expression, voice, and conversation, speaking of history, memory, and emotion.

When I connect with an acquaintance or friend, I expose and obscure my personal history, the things that make me “me,” and they protect and share their own past. Our society is currently in conflict about what parts of your shared history to discuss or hide.

Similarly, as I work, I use paint and mixed media to layer movement and line, light and shadow, color and edge, exposing, obscuring, and abstracting the history and voice of the painting.

My paintings are my invitation of connection and conversation to the viewer, visually discussing ourselves, our community our emotions.
